The G.R.O. Lesotho Operations Team

‘Me Rethabile Skundla (Lesotho Programs Manager) Rethabile is a graduate of Makerere University in Uganda with a degree in Financial Services and Business Computing. On her return to Lesotho she spent two years as a teacher at one of the local colleges, where she assisted the college Rector with administrative duties and the creation of academic policy and procedure. From 2009-2010 she worked as the administrative assistant for OHAfrica, the primary implementing partner of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare at Tsepong ART center in Leribe. Her duties included supervision of administrative support personnel, development of statistical reports related to HIV/AIDS services in the district, financial reporting and administration of transport assistance funds for vulnerable patients. She became the G.R.O. Lesotho Programs Manager in April 2010 and has worked closely with G.R.O. co-founder Jean Margaritis to ensure Lesotho based programming is fully Basotho led by summer 2010.
‘Me Majoyce is from Hlotse-Leribe and is one of the founding members of The G.R.O. Foundation Lesotho. She is also the founder and project coordinator of the GRO Artisans Collective. MaJoyce started creating jewelry and beadwork in 2006, naming her first business after her daughter ‘Thuli’s Jewelry’. Over the last several years, through the addition of more members and a growing customer base the jewelry business has expanded to include a retail location in Hlotse, several third party retail points throughout Lesotho and South Africa, and currently employs several other inspiring women. Her dream is to see GRO become counted as one of the best local organizations known for helping communities and people to develop and grow. She would love to see the GRO Artisans one day having more than 50 members, growing their bead shop and partnering with craft producers and retailers throughout the country. Jewelry is a big part of ‘Me MaJoyce’ life…and she continues to share that gift with her country and community.
‘Ntate Katiso Mota (Oatway Family Scholarship and LEAP Coordinator) Katiso Mota is from Ha-Leshoele in the Leribe district of Lesotho. He is 23 years old and graduated in 2009 from the National University of Lesotho with a degree in Public Administration and Political Science. He joined The G.R.O. Foundation Lesotho team in February 2010 in the role of LEAP coordinator, including his activities as a youth counselor with the Oatway Family Scholarship Fund. He loves his job and he loves working with the students of Leribe district where he can determine the potential of his and other young people’s careers – enriching the experiences and opportunities of students in Lesotho.

The G.R.O. Lesotho Executive Committee 2010-2012

The G.R.O. Foundation Lesotho is registered as a non-profit making and poverty reduction organization under the Societies Act of 1966 in the Kingdom of Lesotho. The organization is comprised of a volunteer executive committee of community leaders, a local operations team and general members representing the various G.R.O. Lesotho projects. The current executive committee was elected in March 2010 and will serve the organization until March 2012.

Me Mapalesa Selia-lia (Treasurer) – Lisemeng II Leribe, 60 years old – ‘Me Selia-lia is one of the founding members of The G.R.O. Foundation Lesotho and is also a member of the G.R.O. Grannies’ poultry project. As a retired Nurse Clinician her experience is extensive. In addition to serving the Lesotho Ministry of Health for over 35 years, she established the local Ha Seetsa Red Cross branch and was awarded the Red Cross’ outstanding volunteer award in 2001. She serves as the treasurer of G.R.O. Lesotho and has been one of the pillars of this and other local community support initiatives.
Ntate Matsoso Sekhonyana (Chairperson) - Lisemeng II Leribe, 60 years old – Mr. Sekhonyana became the chairperson of G.R.O. Lesotho in March 2010. He is currently a teacher at the Lesotho Agriculture College in the Agricultural Engineering Department. He is a volunteer for the Red Cross Society and provides first aid instruction in Leribe district. Over his career he has attended conferences and workshops in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Botswana – and he attended American Farming School in Greece. As G.R.O. Lesotho?s Chairperson Mr. Sekhonyana will represent the organization to local government and community organizations, and will work with James White and G.R.O. Canada to implement the Joint Venture Agreement between the two organizations.
‘Me Lineo ‘Mapokane Phachaka (Secretary) - Lisemeng II Leribe – ‘Me Phachaka is a teacher by profession that holds a MEd. (University of Washington), a MEd. In Early Childhood Special Education (University of Washington) and a BAEd. From the National University of Lesotho. Her extensive experience includes 10 years as a Primary and High School teacher in Lesotho and she has also worked with the Lesotho Government as an inspector of special needs schools. She has previous experience working with International NGOs given her 11 year involvement with the Lesotho Wales Link – she recently retired from that position and was made ‘The Life President of the Lesotho Wales Link’. She brings her skills and vast experience to G.R.O. Lesotho as the secretary and has already demonstrated a strong desire to assist the organization in creating positive change through sustainable development, poverty reduction, a healthy community, and undisrupted peace.
Ntate P.L Motumi (Vice-Chairperson) – Hlotse-Leribe, 59 years old – Supporting Mr. Sekhonyana in representing the organization, Mr. Motumi became the vice-chairperson of G.R.O. Lesotho in March 2010. As a local grocery owner he possesses managing and sales skills in the local market, a very useful tool in supporting the various G.R.O. Lesotho social enterprise projects. His hope is that G.R.O. Lesotho will grow over his 2 year term and he looks forward to working closely with the G.R.O. operations team and his fellow board members in strategically moving forward.
Rev. Simeon Mahlakeng (General Member Representative) – Lisemeng II Leribe, 52 years old – Rev. Mahlakeng is a strong community leader who in addition to teaching at the Leribe English Medium school is the pastor of the local Assemblies of God church community. He is married with 3 children and as a local pastor and teacher he is an indispensible link to the Leribe community. He is a counselor to many local community members facing difficult times and as a representative of the community he is able to assist G.R.O. Lesotho in identifying those in the community who need support the most. He has travelled to Egypt, the UK, the United States and says that his experiences working with people throughout the world make him confident that he can act as a strong link between G.R.O. and the community it serves.
